General information on the German pension system

We have put together a list of useful links relating to the German pensions system. Unless otherwise indicated, the recommended links and websites are in English.



Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin) – the German regulator. Their Annual Reports contains information on the economic environment, international issues and supervision of insurance undertakings and pension funds.


Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales (BMAS) – Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. In the section on pensions they provide short articles on the main features and issues of pensions in Germany, the Summary of the Federal Government's Old-age security report 2012 is compiled every four years and reports on the different pension systems, the income situation of today's pensioners, the uptake of additional private retirement provision and the future pension level. Chapter 4 of the National Social Report also covers pensions.


The BMAS also publishes “Social Security at a Glance” (updated in January 2015). The brochure gives a comprehensive overview of the Social Security system in the Federal Republic of Germany. Contents include pension, health, long-term care and occupational accident insurance schemes as well as the fields of promotion of employment, labour law and educational assistance, rehabilitation of disabled persons, housing allowance and social assistance. This brochure is the English translation of the publication "Soziale Sicherung im Überblick". Regarding pensions, it describes both the state system and the incentive structure for supplementary pensions.


Destatis – the Federal Statistical Office.


Deutsche Rentenversicherung – German statutory pension insurance scheme. Information is available in English as well as in several other European languages.


Pensions-Sicherungs-Verein Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit (PSVaG) – the German pension protection system (website only available in German). Summaries of their Annual Reports are available in English via the text on "Geschäftsberichte".


PensionsEurope – the European Association representing various national associations of pension funds and similar institutions for workplace pension provision. Their Statistical Surveys include data on Germany.
